ROCK N ROLL UNIVERSE concert review section.
Martin Kesici, most Germans will know him as the winner of a recent casting show on TV. But he is different from other casting show winners: first he is much older than the usual winners and second he has a really great rocking voice.
He released his first album right after that casting show, it was kind of soft rock, suitable for radio, but it wasn’t bad at all! Later he started writing own songs and his recently released second album contains tough rock songs influenced for example by Audioslave.
With this album in his luggage he entered the bus to rock Germany. His route passed Erfurt, which is only half an hour from my place, so I decided to have a nice evening there!
Well, this is what happens with bad promotion! No posters, no advertising in newspapers or magazines, no advertising on radio, only a little note in an event magazine. As I arrived there half an hour before the scheduled time, the place was almost empty! Around 500 people fit in there, but indeed it were only around 15 people by now! That doubled until Martin Kesici entered the stage, but this isn’t what you call a successful concert! Hopefully this was only at Erfurt, it is not motivating at all if you play in front of only 30 people every night!
9 p.m. the support band “Tom Stevens” entered stage. What can I tell about them? They haven’t been bad, but basically it wasn’t my cup of coffee! The few more melodic cover songs added to their set have been the best ones in my opinion, all together they’ve been too modern, too nu.
10 p.m. Martin Kesici was ready to rock. As he over viewed the “crowd” he stated that this show will be a more private one and that he’ll come out afterwards to have a beer with all of us!
He really surprised me, I expected a rock show, but not a rock show like this! His band wasn’t small, two awesome guitarists, one great bass player, a drummer and a keyboarder that took over the third guitar once in a while. And it was the first time that I saw a keyboarder “playing” on two laptops on stage!
The show was really great, although you couldn’t see much, because there was barely any light on stage! What they saved on lights, they added on volume, the venue could have been twice as large and packed and it still would have been loud enough!
His songs are fast and melodic, they really kick ass! The song’s topics are taken out of our daily struggle of life. His performance was full of emotions; he put his soul in his songs, a really honest and convincing show. No trace that he once was the winner of a casting show! Oh wait, one trace: there was a girl in the front row with a sign, and indeed she hold the sign before her chest the whole concert, like at a Backstreet Boys gig!
As I said, I didn’t expect a show like this, if you like a modern way of rock, melodic and with lot’s of emotions, give him a try if he plays anywhere near you, you won’t regret!
