After over 30 years and 3 deaths, the New York Dolls have returned with their 3rd official studio album. The 2 original members, David Johansen(Vocals) & Sylvain Sylvain(Guitar) team up with drummer Brian Delaney, lead guitarist Steve Conte, long time Buster Poindexter/Banshee keyboardist Brian Koonin and ex Hanoi Rocks, Jet Boy and Joan Jett bass player Sami Yaffa to form the current line up. Though the New York Dolls had a short career in the early 70’s they left a huge impact on the music scene, influencing everyone from Aerosmith, Kiss, Motley Crue, Guns & Roses, Poison to Blondie, Morrisey,The Sex Pistols and the Clash to name a few. On the new CD the Dolls are looking forward rather than back by intertwining their classic rock & roll style and sound with what’s happening now in the world of rock.
The first track “We’re All In Love,”starts off with a bass line reminiscent of the Dolls classic “Human Being”. Actually, with Johansen’s classic harp playing mixed with Conte & Sylvain’s guitars this song would’ve fit in perfectly on 'Too Much Too Soon'.The CD continues to rock on through with rockers like “Runnin’ Around,"”Punishing World”(my favorite off the CD),"Gotta Get Away From Tommy," "Rainbow Store.”"Gimme Luv & Turn On the Light”(which reminds me of Social Distortion). David Jo’s vocals come out strong on “Fishnets & Cigarettes,” and as he charges"Lets Dance…”on “Dancing On the Lip Of a Volcano” as Conte bursts into a short but fiery solo. The first single being released is “Dance Like A Monkey” which is a fun kind of rocker reminiscent of the Dolls' cover of “Stranded In the Jungle,” and I think it should go over pretty well with the younger generation. There is also a cool bonus track called “Seventeen” and even a bonus DVD on the making of.
Overall the CD brings back memories of David Johansen’s first solo album in which he collaborated with Sylvain Sylvain. This CD should go over with any generation of music fans as it has something for everyone’s veins.
I give this 5 out of 5 lipstick killers!
